On the 24th to 27th of August 2021, the Second Picture Stone Symposion will take place at Gotlands Museum in Visby. Ten years after the First Picture Stone Symposium in Visby, it is time again to present current research, new projects, approaches and perspectives. The interdisciplinary and international Symposion is going to gather well-known experts as well as young scholars and PhD students, currently dealing with the gotlandic picture stones. There is much going on in picture stone research at the moment – our project Ancient Images 2.0, many PhD projects, new research on models, influences, parallels, on archaeological contexts and dating, craftsmanship and raw material, new ways and modes of interpretation, as well as re-use and the “afterlifeˮ of the picture stones. An excursion day is also planned, with nice field trips to several picture stone spots, churches, and other locations.
A programme and further information about the symposion (registration et cet.) will be published on this website during 2020. There will be no call for papers, however, suggestions are welcome!
