Workshop: Digitization of Carved/Sculptured Stones and Rock Art – Projects and Approaches
On the 12th to 13th of September 2019, the project Ancient Images 2.0 organsied a workshop about the digitization of carved stones and rock art in Visby. The aim of this inital workshop was to bring together different scholars working with the digital recording and presentation of stone monuments comparable to our material, like carved stones, sculptured stones, stone inscriptions, rock art et cet. We gathered an international group of archaeologists and digital experts, presenting their ongoing, planned or completed projects, in order to discuss methods, new approaches, problems, and possible obstacles, to exchange experiences and to create a network of specialists in the field of digital research on archaeological stone monuments. The workshop was focussing on Late Iron Age monuments from Northern Europe, as well as prehistoric rock carvings, however, the Egyptian Near East and other periods and places were considered as well.
